About

I’m following the McDougall Maximum Weight Loss (MWL) food program as outlined by Dr. John McDougall in his book. The program is a fat free starch based vegan diet where you also avoid some calorie dense vegan foods such as flour products, soy foods, nuts, & avocados.  The diet also emphasizes green and yellow veggies.  Dr. McDougall has written numerous books which can be found in most public libraries or they can be bought on Amazon.com or through his website.

This blog is my personal MWL cookbook.  It’s a collection of my favorite recipes and food photos on the program.

    Hi Letha,

I noticed your website listed on a comment on the McDougall forum. Your photos and recipes look like they would be quite helpful to folks on my McDougalling blog, too, so I’ll add you to the blogroll there.

    Hi Letha,
I stumbled upon some of your posts at the Mcdougall forum. I only became aware of McDougall when reading posts at the Fat Smash Diet forum. I’ve been on that program since Feb 5, 2009, but I think I’ll switch to this program because of certain health issues. I have lost 17 lbs since Feb 5, and have another 100 lbs to go. I hope you keep this blog going, as it’s very inspirational to me.
    Regards,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
Thanks for taking the time to leave me a note. Congratulations on the 17 pound loss. My newest thing is making ginormous pots of stews so I don’t have to cook for days. I hope to see you on the McDougall Board.

Hi, Letha! (I have seen you on the McDougall site.) I just want to tell you how splendid your blog is. I saw the movie Julie and Julia last week, and I just loved it. As I watched the story of this young woman who blogged about making all the recipes in Julia Childs’ book The Art of French Cooking, I was fantasizing about a blog of healthy McDougall cooking. And here is your blog! It is so wonderful, so much more wonderful than I could ever do… and now I don’t have to do it! Thank you, thank you. Jan

    Hi Amy,
Yes, I’m still following Mary’s Mini = Rice, red bell peppers, and apples. I don’t think I could have stuck to it a year ago. I think a year of following Dr. McDougall’s maximum weight loss plan without cheating even once allowed my body transition to lower density foods. So when I made my diet very monotonous as a way of further encouraging weight loss, it was easier then it would have been otherwise. For someone coming from a SAD diet or even a high fat vegan or raw food diet, I would suggest that they start with the regular McDougall plan. If you’re having difficulty sticking to the regular plan, seek out some of the richer dishes on the regular plan like muffins and cookies and other treats with nuts, avocado, or tofu. Once you can successfully stick to the regular plan for a couple of weeks without cheating you can step down to the MWL plan. And after you have successfully followed that for a few weeks without cheating, then you could try a Mary’s mini. I think if you fall off plan, you should back up to an easier plan for a few weeks until you transition again. Transitions are difficult. It takes time. But it’s worth it.

    Hello Letha,
I wanted to write and thank you for your recipes and menu planning. I cooked yesterday, for my first day of following your menu plans. I live alone, and have leftover eggplant curry and rice for today. Delicious. I love steel cut oats, and appreciate some of the different ways to prepare these.
I have a question? I notice you include salad in your meals. I struggle to eat salad and would prefer a substitute. Could I eat extra veges instead? I was thinking of cucumber or brocolli or would you kindly suggest something else in place of the salad.
    Thank you again.
    Blessings Yvonne

    Hello Letha,

I forgot to ask you about hominy.

What would be a good substitue for this? Maybe corn?

I live in Canada, so it isn’t readily available.

    Thank you again,
    Yvonne
